Peace and Prosperity Ep.29
▶ Breakdown of N. Korea-U.S. nuclear talks in Stockholm: Analysis

The highly anticipated working-level talks between North Korea and the U.S. fell apart without producing any tangible results. North Korea's chief nuclear negotiator Kim Myong-gil said the negotiations broke down due to the U.S. team's “old attitude.” The U.S. State Department later denied the North's account, saying the two sides had “good discussions.” What can explain the difference in their statements? When Kim Myong-gil made the announcement about the collapse of the meeting, he added whether the North will maintain its self-imposed moratorium on ICBM launches is completely up to the U.S. Watchers say Kim's remarks are intended to pressure U.S. President Trump, who has touted North Korea's ban on ICBM tests as a major foreign policy success. Will the North continue its brinkmanship and return to ICBM tests? How will Trump counter the North's strategy?

To break down the latest developments, we are joined by Karl Friedhoff, a fellow in public opinion and Asia policy at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. To broaden the perspective, we also connect with guest experts on Skype, including Mark Fitzpatrick, former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Non-proliferation and Victor Teo, Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong.
