Peace and Prosperity Ep.26
▶ Will Moon-Trump summit offer a turning point for nuclear talks?

South Korean President Moon Jae-in will sit down with U.S. President Donald Trump for their ninth summit talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week. One of the key issues the two leaders are expected to discuss is the defense cost-sharing pact between South Korea and the U.S. What is Seoul’s current share of defense costs for maintaining U.S. troops in the country, and what is behind Trump’s recent rhetoric against allies? Amid some nascent signs of dialogue between Pyeongyang and Washington, Moon expressed his willingness to support the restart of North Korea-U.S. talks. How will his sitdown with his U.S. counterpart affect the future course of nuclear negotiations?
To break down the latest developments, we are joined by Kim Jina, Research Fellow at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, in the studio. We also connect with guest experts to broaden the perspective, including Karl Friedhoff, a fellow in public opinion and Asia policy at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and Thomas Countryman, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation.
